Its about 70 degrees today, with slight overcast and mild wind. I decided to head out to Stevens pond located right in Manchester New Hampshire. Stevens pond is a small body of water, very shallow and weedy, with interstate 93 traveling right by the pond. I had a slow start to the day landing a small pickerel with a Bass Pro Shops medium depth crankbait. I was seeing a lot of action in the water and was starting to see some bass beds being made. I ran into a couple other fisherman on kayaks who seemed to be having little success.
Around 11am i landed my first bass on the NEKO rig right under the highway bridge, I find the NEKO rig to be perfect for this small pond due to the dense weeds, even early in the season. I was throwing a bass pro shops tournament series 6″ watermelon squirmin worm with a weedless setup. I slowed down my presentation and starting aiming for think cover and the day got better. I landed 4-5 more bass with this technique.
With things slowing down on the NEKO rig, I switched back to throwing the bass pro shops medium depth crankbait, fishing in about 4-6 ft of water. I landed 5-6 pickerel with this technique along with plenty of weeds, but no bass. It was a decent day on the water, I do think next week the fish will start to become more aggressive with the warmer weather moving in.
Until next time.. J
